What is God Passionate About... Lent is a time we focus on the passion of our Lord Jesus. It is amazing to consider that God loves us so much that He was willing to take on human flesh and be born as a human just so He could suffer and die on the cross for us. Even in spite of our sin—in spite of our unworthiness—God’s love for us knows no bounds. He was willing to go to great lengths—He was willing to pay a great price—for our salvation. You might say He is passionately in love with each one of us (Song of Solomon 4:9-10). God is passionate about you! That’s why Jesus came to earth. That is why He lived among us. That is why He died on the cross. His passionate love for you led to His passion and death—the whipping—the mocking—and the cruel crucifixion—all for you—so that you could have forgiveness and eternal life with Him. On Maundy Thursday, only hours before His betrayal, Jesus said to His disciples, “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (John 13:34). Do we love others in our family, our work place, our community, and our congregation as passionately as Jesus loves us? Are we willing to suffer and even die for others the way Jesus suffered and died for us? The honest answer might not be a clear yes or no. It might be, “sometimes,” or “to a certain extent.” When we love others as Jesus loves us, we are doing more that just following His example. We are the channel or the conduit through which His loves flows into the world. Jesus will bring His love and compassion into your home, your workplace, and your neighborhood—through you. Through Jesus’ passion and death on the cross He has freed you from sin, guilt, fear, and from all that would hold you down and keep you from sharing His love with others you meet everyday. In Jesus and because of his passion and death we are able to love others as passionately as He has loved us. This is what makes life worth living.
