Solomon (1) Teacher of WisdomReadings: 1 Kings 4:29-34 and Colossians 2:2-3 The proverbial wisdom of Solomon has been known throughout the ages—and rightly so. God promised him, “I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be” (1 Kings 3:12). God kept His promise (as He keeps all His promises). “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore” (1 Kings 4:29). The news of Solomon’s great wisdom spread to other countries. People from all over the world came to listen to him (1 Kings 10:24). One foreign leader who came to see him was the queen of Sheba. She “talked with him about everything that was on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her . . . She was overwhelmed” (1 Kings 10:2- 3, 5). It is no wonder that we still are impressed with the wisdom of Solomon to this very day. This divine wisdom, which Solomon had in abundance, became incarnate in Jesus Christ. St. Paul explains, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know Him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. . . . It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Therefore, as it is written: ‘Let him who boasts boast in the Lord’” (1 Cor. 1:20-24, 30). Solomon himself wrote, “Wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Prov. 8:11). If that is true concerning human wisdom, then how much more that is true with respect to Christ! Only Christ, the wisdom of God in the flesh, can teach us about life, forgiveness, and salvation—eternal things—the knowledge of which will continue even in heaven, long after all earthly knowledge has faded away. Christ is both the teacher and the subject. If the Queen of Sheba was impressed with the wisdom of Solomon, then how much more should we be impressed with Jesus? As He told the Pharisees, “now one greater than Solomon is here” (Matt. 12:42). Prayer: Heavenly Father, the apostle James writes, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, . . . and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). I am asking you now Lord, give me Your wisdom from above—the wisdom that only comes from Your Son Jesus. Amen.
