David (1)

King of Kings

Readings: 2 Samuel 7:16 and Matthew 27:11

God made a very special promise to David. The Lord told him, “When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body. . . . Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before Me; your throne will be established forever” (2 Sam. 7:12- 16).

What a marvelous promise. Here King David had God’s promise that David’s kingdom will have no end. David’s offspring will rule forever. In world history, kingdoms come and go. Family dynasties last for several generations, then they are overturned by a foreign power or a different family in their own country. But God says to David, “Not so with your family—it will rule forever. Its kingdom will have no end.”

This promise was so precious to David and his ancient people that they even put it to song. Psalm 89 declares, “I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever . . . You said, ‘I have made a covenant with My chosen one, I have sworn to David My servant, ‘I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations . . . I will not violate My covenant . . . and I will not lie to David . . . his line will continue forever and his throne [will] endure before Me like the sun” (Ps. 89:1, 3, 4, 34, 35, 36). Yet, many found cause to doubt this great promise.

In 586 B.C. the Babylonians conquered Judah, crushed Jerusalem, and took its people captive. David’s great empire was gone! The reign of David’s family tree was over! Like a giant oak it fell with a thunderous crash, and there was nothing left but a stump of its former glory. But those who listened to Isaiah had hope. Because he assured them that they had not seen the end of the Davidic dynasty. “For to us a child is born, . . . Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever (Is. 9:7).

Or in other words, “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” (Is. 11:1) And who is that branch? The Hebrew word for “branch” (also used in Zech. 6:12-13) sounds very similar to the word for “Nazarene.” The branch is the Nazarene. So Matt. 2:23 tells us that Jesus grew up “in a town called Nazareth. So it was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: ‘He will be called a Nazarene.’”

Contrary to all outward appearances, with the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the Davidic dynasty did not come to an end. It merely began to pave the way for David’s greater Son—Jesus of Nazareth. He is the heir of David who will reign forever. Of His kingdom there will be no end. “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever” (Rev. 11:15).

Prayer: I thank You Lord that You did not forget Your promise to king David. But you kept it through Jesus in a greater way than anyone could have imagined. Keep me mindful Lord, that all of Your promises are fulfilled in Christ.

Amen.
