Pillar of Fire

Beacon of Light

Readings: Exodus 13: 21-22 and John 8:12

In the dark night of the Sinai desert God was there—providing for His people—in a pillar of fire. Through the fire He gave them light and reassured them of His presence. This was not the only time God provided light for His people.

On the first day of creation darkness covered everything (Gen. 1:2). Then God said, “Let there be light” (Gen. 1:3) and immediately there was light. By the power of His almighty Word, He shattered the primeval night and dispelled the gloomy darkness.

That Word is Jesus Christ. St. John tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it . . . This Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:1- 5, 14).

Jesus told the people, “ I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Matthew recognized Jesus’ work as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, “The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow ofdeath a light has dawned” (Matt. 4:16 and Is. 9:2, cf. Is. 42:16, 60:1-3,19). Jesus lights our way through life like the pillar of fire in the Sinai wilderness.

Jesus came into the world to bring light from above—to dispel the darkness of sin, death, and Satan. Because of Jesus, sin is forgiven (Col. 2:13), death is merely the gate to heaven (Luke 23:43), and Satan is powerless to harm us (Luke 10:17-18, Rev. 20:2). “He can harm us none, He’s judged the deed is done; One little word can fell him” (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, stanza 3).

Through faith in Jesus this light is aglow in our hearts. For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6). Jesus is the divine light that illuminates our darkest hours. Whatever shadows hang over your life—doubt, fear, or depression— you can say with King David, “You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light” (2 Sam. 22:29). He will guide your way no matter how deep the darkness.

Prayer: Jesus, You are the light of my life. In times of darkness, I look to You to show me the way. Lead me in path of righteousness. When my last hour comes, enlighten the valley of the shadow of death and reassure me of Your loving presence. Amen.
