Eve Suitable HelperReadings: Genesis 2:19-24 and Luke 7:11-17 After God created all the animals, He placed Adam in the Garden of Eden. It became Adam’s responsibility to give the animals names. God brought the animals to Adam, “to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and the beasts of the field” (Gen. 2:19). Adam must have marveled at the beauty, splendor, and diversity of God’s animal kingdom. Yet, as wonderful as these creatures were, “no suitable helper was found” (Gen. 2:20). Did Adam think he would find a suitable helper from among the animals? As he gave the animals their names was he looking for the right one to be his companion in life? If so, he was very disappointed. Even after surveying all the animals, Adam was still very alone and that was not good (Gen. 2:18). Only when Adam finished naming all the animals did God then create Eve. It is as though God were saying, “Adam, don’t be disappointed. You haven’t seen anything yet. Wait till you see the special companion I will make specifically for you. In her, you will have a suitable, lifelong partner—one better than you ever imagined.” When Adam first saw Eve, he knew she was the one. From God’s entire creation, Eve was the only one with which Adam could truly share his life. Only with Eve could he share a future, a love, and a family. Only she could be a suitable helper. This directs our attention to the ultimate suitable helper—the Lord Himself. All of us need help in life. We need help to be strong when we are weak. We need help being patient when we are angry. We need help forgiving when we are vengeful. We need help to do the right thing when we are tempted. From where does our help for such things come? If we are like Adam and look in the wrong place, we like Adam will be disappointed. Isaiah asked the people of Jerusalem, “To whom will you run for help?” (Is 10:3). Many of the people in his day were looking for help in the wrong place (Is. 30:1-3; 31:1). They were going to be greatly disappointed (Is. 57:13). Suitable help could only be found in the Lord (Is. 41:10-14). The psalmist also knew God was his only help when he wrote, “I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Ps.121:1-2). So also we look to the hills for our help, specifically to Mount Calvary. In Jesus “God has come to help His people” (Luke 7:16). In Him alone we find our ultimate suitable helper. Only in Him do we find our help for confronting life’s every challenge. Prayer: Lord Jesus, I cry to You for help. Come to the aid of all who call upon Your name. Uphold the weak with the power of Your righteous right hand. Let all who need help find their ultimate help in You. Amen. |
